Why Did They Close Stapleton Airport?
In 1995, Denver voters decided to close Stapleton International Airport and replace it with a new facility, Denver International Airport. The reasons for this decision were many, but the primary one was that Stapleton was simply too small to accommodate the growing number of passengers and flights coming into and out of Denver. The old airport also lacked the modern amenities and facilities that today’s travelers have come to expect.
The new Denver International Airport is much larger than Stapleton ever was, and it has state-of-the-art facilities including an underground train system that whisks passengers from the terminal to their gates in just minutes. It also has more parking spaces, more shopping and dining options, and is overall a much more pleasant experience for travelers. So while it may be sad to see such an iconic landmark as Stapleton International Airport go away, the reality is that it was time for an upgrade.
And with the new airport now up and running smoothly, Denver can continue to grow and thrive as a travel destination for years to come.
What Did They Do With Stapleton Airport?
Stapleton International Airport was the primary airport serving Denver, Colorado, United States from 1929 to 1995. At its peak in the 1980s, it was the busiest airport in the country with 33 million passengers per year. In 1995, a new airport, Denver International Airport (DIA), opened and replaced Stapleton as Denver’s primary airport.
The old Stapleton property was then redeveloped into a mixed-use neighborhood now known as Central Park. The land for Stapleton International Airport was originally purchased by the City of Denver in 1925 for $650,000. Construction on the new airport began in 1927 and it officially opened on October 17, 1929.
For several years it was one of the busiest airports in the world with over 100 flights taking off and landing each day. In 1974, voters approved a $158 million bond issue to build a new passenger terminal at Stapleton. The new terminal opened in 1977 and quickly became outdated as air travel continued to grow throughout the 1980s.
By the early 1990s it became clear that a new larger airport was needed to serve Denver and plans were made to build DIA. Construction on DIA began in 1989 and it officially opened on February 28th, 1995 replacing Stapleton as Denver’s primary airport.
